POWER / PowerPC

POWER PROCESSOR (formerly PowerPC)
This is famous architecture by freescale. Initially it was developed by Apple - IBM - Motorola alliance in 1991. But now it is maintained by freescale (from Motorola) Power processors are specifically used in embedded system domain. Power architecture is specially used in ?

» Safety critical applications - aerospace, defense

» Industrial applications - controlling equipments etc

» Networking equipments - Ethernet switches, routers, wireless base stations etc

» Gaming system - Gaming console,.

Power processors are available up to the speed of 1.8 Ghz. Multi core chips are also available based on power architecture.
Power Cores…
QorIQ = based on e500 core, dual core or single core Ex: P1020
PowerQUICC= based on e600 core, use in communication domain

   PowerQUICC I(MPC8xx)                 PowerQUICC II(MPC82xx)

PowerQUICC II Pro(MPC83xx)         PowerQUICC III (MPC85xx)

Host Processors = based on e600 or e500 core MPC7xx, MPC7xxx, MPC6xx

Automotive Controllers = MPC5xx, MPC5xxx, freq 66 Mhz

FEATURES OF POWER ARCHITECTURE

·  RISC processor
·  speed up to 1.5 Ghz
·  Support for SIMD ( AltiVec in terms of freescale) technology results in 128 bits vector operations
·  Support for MMU ( Memory management unit), this means support of virtual memory concept in RTOS
·  signal processing engine provide support for signal processing
·  Enhanced energy management solution, new energy modes are added. These modes are JOG, packet lossless deep sleep mode
·  support for high end buses like express PCI, VME etc
·  multi core processor are also available like MPC8640D chip

Name of some latest power chips
MPC8640D, MPC8572,  MPC5674 etc
